Desciption

Design for 21 zero-energy houses. The challenge was to design affordable homes producing as much energy as they consume. First the need for energy was restricted by sun orientated design and by using a high insulation value (Rc=6,0). The houses are not connected to the gas distribution system so depend entirely on electric energy for heating. The houses are equipped with a non-heated conservatory on the south side. The energy performance of the houses was calculated. Then the roof was equipped with as much photo-voltaic cells as needed to fulfill the energy need. The houses are heated by an electric boiler. Heat distribution is done by wall and floor heating system (Low temperature).

By making both an energy and a financial calculation on the design it was proved that it is possible to build low-cost zero-energy houses. The houses score 7,8 out of 10 or higher on the ‘GPR-Gebouw’ tool (measuring sustainability aspects energy, environment, health, usability and future value)
